A kettlebell or girya (russian) is an iron or steel ball with a handle on top. You see them almost in every gym but what is the history behind them and their function?

The kettlebell as we know it was not for exercising!
It was used in the 18th century to weigh vegetables and grains at the market. One pood (пуд) is about 16.8 kg. The kettlebell has since evolved and is now used as a training tool.

Why should I use a kettlebell?

As a JiuJitsuka, you don't have that much time and often don't have the energy to do strength and conditioning training. 

Brazilian Jiujitsu is intense enough, and on top of that, you already spend a lot of time there under tension. So you don't want to risk getting injured outside of your drill/skill and spar sessions. 

You know yourself that supplemental training is important, but you have to force yourself to go to the gym sometimes, the kettlebell is your best friend then.

Sports specific

You can mimic what you are doing in the dojo in a short time with a kettlebell and it takes up virtually no space.

Movement patterns of grappling and BJJ can be mimicked with a kettlebell, say when do you benchpress or deadlift someone away in a fight? Almost never. So the kettlebell is much closer to the bio mechanics of JiuJitsukas.

Will I lose weight from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes and no

Yes: We can say with certainty that with a BJJ class at BJJ Amersfoort you are burning quite a few calories. On average between 700 and 1500 per hour. This of course depends on the intensity of the training. We have tested this with a heart rate monitor.

No: I drive past the Mac Donalds every night after classes are over. Something whispers in my ear that I have earned a big mac menu after such an intense BJJ workout. Big Mac (550cal), fries (230cal), milkshake (530cal).

You get where we're going with this. Don't consume more than you can burn and you'll be fine with losing weight!
